Interiors of homes in 8 Mile Settlement on the outskirts of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. My friends lived in the settlement and I would stay with them on my visits to PNG. The homes were made with scrap timber and wrought iron, furnished with plastic chairs and other items. Some homes had power, evident from numerous television sets seen in the photographs. The power was rigged up from makeshift cables run from local power lines. Mosquito nets were commonly seen features, the insects could be vicious day and night. Bibles also featured prominently, signifying the importance of Christianity. Babies were born and raised in these homes, and later in life did their homework by candlelight at night after school.
